Front cover

Winsor & Newton Watercolor Book with 134 color samples from around 1887 - 1890

Showing the actual colors used by some of the most famous artists of the late 1800's such as John Singer Sargent & Winslow Homer
This book has 134 hand painted Winsor Newton watercolor samples on 5 pages of 24 color swatches and one page of 14 color swatches. Each is labeled with the color name.
The book contains a landmark essay on the Watercolour Controversy of permanance. With this book Winsor Newton lead the world in improving the permanance of watercolors.
At the same time they began rating their paints for permanance so artists could choose and trust their fine paints.
Also included is a brief 8 page catalog of their artists supplies from the turn of the century of every kind: Watercolor paint, Oil Paint, Boxed Sets, Inks and Brushes -see photos below
This book is approximately 7 1/4 " x 4 3/4 " cloth bound.. In condition shown: Many colors are amazingly bright for the age ( note photography and computer screens do not give justice the actual subtile colors) only a few colors have faded in its 100+ years of aging. There is yellowing and foxing to the pages. There is a poor tape repair at the swatch pages. Spine and cover are crisp and show minimal wear. There are some stains and yellowing with occasional foxing and discoloration concentrated amongst the swatch mounting pages. Very nice condition considering the age of this book.
